WHAT WE OFFER

Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s (PRHC) Breast Assessment Centre (BAC) is home to the Ontario Breast Screening Program, where women receive screening mammograms. The BAC offers a coordinated and timely approach to the assessment and diagnosis of breast health concerns. Services may include:

  • Screening mammography

  • Diagnostic mammography (special views to diagnose breast problems)

  • Breast ultrasound

  • Image-guided core breast biopsies

  • Breast MRI

  • Onsite radiologists specializing in breast imaging

  • Assistance with surgical and oncology referrals

  • Pre-operative procedures for breast surgery

  • Education and support

  • Genetic assessment and testing through the PRHC Genetics Program

  • Referrals to various community partners

PRHC’s Breast Assessment Centre is accredited through the Canadian Association of Radiologists Mammography Accreditation Program. As an accredited site, patients can be assured that they are receiving the highest quality mammography images.

WHO WE ARE

Breast Health Navigator (BHN)
A Breast Health Navigator (BHN) is a healthcare professional with specialized knowledge in breast health. BHNs are certified Patient Navigators with the National Consortium of Breast Centers. The BHN is available to patients and their families for information, education and support about breast health, and can:

  • Answer questions and help prepare you for appointments

  • Help you learn about your diagnosis and its treatment

  • Find resources and community supports

  • Guide you through the healthcare system

  • Help you feel more in control of your care

  • Help you speak with doctors and staff

  • Streamline and schedule appointments

  • Provide emotional support

SEEKING CARE

For women 50 years of age and older with no history of breast cancer, no breast implants and no current breast problems. Women can self-refer by calling 705-740-8166. Benefits of the OBSP include:

  • Result letters sent to patient and primary care provider
  • Reminder letters sent to patient when they are due for next screening (every one (1) to two (2) years

This program is for women aged 40-49, women with breast implants, women with a personal history of breast cancer, and men with a strong family history of breast cancer.

Ask your healthcare provider to fax a completed referral form to 705-740-8167.

This service is for women aged 30-69 whose  primary care provider has deemed them as high risk for developing breast cancer (i.e. significant family history)

Upon receipt of the referral, the Breast Health Navigator will facilitate genetic assessment with PRHC’s Genetic Counselor to determine eligibility for the program. Once confirmed to be high risk by the Genetic Counselor, annual mammography and breast MRI will be offered to patients.

RESOURCES

You should always be breast aware. Being breast aware means knowing how your breasts normally look and feel. That way if there are any unusual changes you’ll be more likely to notice them. If you notice any changes, tell your healthcare provider. Most changes are normal, but you should have them checked. Learn more about breast awareness, assessment and more below:
