DIALYSIS AT HOME

Dialysis at home can be done in two ways:

  • Peritoneal dialysis is when the dialysis takes place in the body by having a special fluid called dialysate put into your abdomen by a catheter where it helps filter out toxins and extra fluid which is what your kidney used to do.  When it is finished, the fluid is drained out through the catheter into a bag.  This is done 3-5 times per day and you may even be able to do it at night while you sleep.

  • Home Hemodialysis is where dialysis is done by a machine outside of the body.  The blood is taken from your body through a needle or through a catheter inserted into your veins.  This machine removes your blood and filters toxins and extra fluids before it returns to your body.

Even though you are having dialysis at home you will still have access to your healthcare team. You will have appointments with your nephrologist, nurse, social worker, dietitian and pharmacist.
