A Community Treatment Order (CTO) is a form issued or renewed by a physician that allows a person to receive care and treatment in their own community rather than being treated in the hospital. CTO’s help ensure safe, effective care for anybody with serious mental illness. At Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) we have a dedicated CTO Coordinator who works with people living in Peterborough, Haliburton, and Northumberland counties and City of Kawartha Lakes.

CTO’s are intended for people:

  • With severe and persistent mental illness

  • Experiencing recurrent hospitalizations which can be attributed to non-compliance with treatment and follow-up

  • Who do not engage voluntarily in outpatient follow up

  • Who demonstrate benefit from treatment

The CTO coordinator:

  • Assists in identifying people who would benefit from a CTO

  • Assists the treatment team with referrals and coordinating the process

  • Provides education to patients, families, healthcare and service providers
