CHEMOTHERAPY

Chemotherapy (sometimes called chemo) uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is used to treat many types of cancer. Chemotherapy drugs can be given on their own or they can be given together in a combination (called combination chemotherapy). Click here to learn more about chemotherapy.

IMMUNOTHERAPY

Our immune system has the ability to find and destroy cancer cells. But cancer cells can sometimes hide from the immune system and avoid being destroyed. Cancer cells may also stop the immune system from working properly. Immunotherapy helps to strengthen or restore the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. VISITING THE SYSTEMIC THERAPY SUITE

The Cancer Care team at PRHC recognizes the importance of having a support system and presence for our patients who are receiving cancer treatment. We are happy to welcome visitors to our systemic treatment suite. Each patient undergoing treatment may be accompanied by one (1) support person during their first treatment visit. This can be extended beyond the first treatment as required.

Visitors should be aware that there is risk of exposure to the hazardous drugs we give simply by being in the suite. For this reason, visitors will not be permitted to eat or drink while visiting. Individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive should not visit the treatment area.

Every effort will be made to facilitate having visitors in the suite, but physical space continues to be an issue. We ask that visitors be mindful of how busy our treatment area is. There may be times when visitors are asked to leave temporarily, or times when we are unable to accommodate visitors in order to maintain safety for both patients and nursing staff.

Please note that visitors under the age of 18 are not permitted in the treatment suite.
