Distinction means PRHC "has demonstrated national leadership in the provision of high-quality stroke care"

Accreditation Canada has issued its formal decision letter congratulating Peterborough Regional Health Centre for achieving Stroke Distinction – a designation indicating that PRHC “has demonstrated national leadership in the provision of high-quality stroke care.”

Stroke Distinction sealStroke Distinction is a rigorous and highly-specialized program developed in partnership with Heart and Stroke Canada, and follows standards based on Canadian Stroke Best Practices and in-depth, stroke-specific performance indicators and protocols.

Following a site visit in September, Accreditation Canada surveyors commended PRHC for our outstanding commitment to excellence and innovation in stroke services, and for successfully implementing significant patient care improvement initiatives, including the extension of the swallowing assessment program into the Emergency Department.

As part of the Central East Stroke Network, PRHC is the designated District Stroke Centre for the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) region, providing stroke services across the continuum of care for patients from Haliburton, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, Peterborough, and Northern Hastings County. The District Stroke Program is committed to providing the best possible stroke care based on best practices and evidence, to working with community partners to provide leadership in stroke care, to ongoing education and training, and to continuous monitoring, evaluation and improvement of services throughout the region.

“This achievement of Stroke Distinction can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of our hospital leadership and front-line staff, particularly the teams in the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, ICU, Integrated Stroke Unit, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech & Language Pathology,” said Dr. Peter McLaughlin, President & CEO. “Not to be forgotten is the hard work of our Decision Support Team, which provides the quality data that supports our improvement journey. I would like to thank everyone involved for their ongoing commitment to delivering and supporting excellent stroke care for our patients. Congratulations on this well-deserved distinction.”

“Stroke Distinction is yet another remarkable achievement and a clear measure of the excellent work being done at PRHC every day,” said Adair Ireland-Smith, Chair of the PRHC Board of Directors. “I would like to congratulate and thank the leadership, healthcare professionals, staff and volunteers at PRHC for the tremendous amount of work they do to ensure patients and their families receive the highest possible quality of stroke care, every day.”
