Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) is a term used to describe a situation where a clinician provides or administers medication that intentionally brings about a patient’s death, at the request of the patient.

MAID is intended for patients with a serious condition that causes long-term suffering. To be eligible for MAID, the patient must be a competent adult capable of making decisions with respect to their health and have a “grievous and irremediable medical condition” that causes the person to endure suffering that is intolerable.
