WHAT WE OFFER

Cardiac Care at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is one of four (4) Regional Centres of Excellence at the Health Centre. We care for patients in Durham, North Hastings, Northumberland, Peterborough and the City of Kawartha Lakes who have experienced a heart attack, arrhythmias, unstable angina or heart failure.

From the emergency “Code STEMI” procedure, which stops a heart attack in its tracks, through to our cardiac rehabilitation program,  our care is supported across the board by the exceptional skills, knowledge and experience of our multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. This care team expands beyond staff at PRHC, to our unique partnership with Kawartha Cardiology.

CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LAB

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab provides regional service for Durham, North Hastings, Northumberland, Peterborough and the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic procedure used to detect blockages and/or narrowing in the coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that bring blood to the heart muscle. Dye is injected into the arteries and x-ray pictures are taken to help the doctor see the outline of the arteries. The test can also be used to measure how well the valves and muscles are working.

PRHC’s regional Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (angioplasty) program was successfully launched in early 2012, and the Health Centre now offers emergency “Code STEMI” cardiac stent procedures for patients throughout the region on a 24-hour basis.

TELEMETRY

The inpatient medicine and cardiology unit at PRHC provides care for patients who have cardiac -related illnesses. Located on A4, the unit consists of 32 medicine beds, which can successfully monitor up to 16 telemetry patients. Telemetry enables the clinical staff to continually monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm.

This area of the hospital is dedicated to providing therapeutic, diagnostic, and educational components of cardiac care medicine.
