WHO WE ARE

ED staff assess and treat a complete range of patients from the region. We are a designated Trauma Centre. Learn more about the Trauma Program here.

The ED has an interprofessional team consisting of:

  • Environmental Services

  • Laboratory Technicians

  • Medical Radiation Technologists

  • Occupational Therapists

  • Pharmacists

  • Physicians

  • Physiotherapists

  • Registered Nurses (RN)

  • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)

  • Respiratory Therapists

  • Social Workers

We are a formal teaching site so you may see learners as part of your care team.

SEEKING CARE

When patients arrive in the ED, they will be seen by the triage nurse who will assess their condition. Patients will then be asked to register and take a seat in the waiting room. In the ED, the sickest patients are seen first, meaning you may wait longer even if you arrived first.

Neurosurgical, major trauma and burn emergencies are treated in our department. If required, these patients can be transferred through CritiCall by air or land ambulance to regional accepting facilities, predominantly in Toronto or Kingston.

As the District Stroke Centre for this region, PRHC provides emergency stroke care to patients from Peterborough and four surrounding hospitals.

Do You Need a Family Doctor?

If you need a family doctor, you are an “unattached patient” and need to be connected. Here are two options:

Register for Health Care Connect and a nurse will search for a doctor or nurse practitioner who is accepting new patients in your community.

Contact an Ontario physician to ask if they are accepting new patients.

  • Use The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s Find a Doctor search.
  • Choose “Advanced Search” to find a doctor near you (by city/town or postal code).
  • Click on “Additional Search Options” to narrow your search (to family doctors and/or language spoken).
  • Contact the doctor to check if they are accepting new patients

HOW TO HELP US HELP YOU

Bring a list of allergies and any medications you’re currently taking, including prescription and non-prescription or over-the-counter medications in their original containers and packaging.

Leave all valuables, including rings, watches, jewelry, important papers or documents at home.

The ED is one of the busiest areas of the hospital. Due to limited space, adult patients are asked to limit their companions to one at a time in the ED.

If you need emergency care, please go to your nearest Emergency Department immediately or call 911. If you do not need emergency care, you’ve got other healthcare options close by. Community members are urged to consider the following alternate options for healthcare before considering a trip to the ED:

Primary Care: Call your family doctor or nurse practitioner. Same-day access instructions will be offered via the office voicemail message.

Health Connect Ontario, a new tool that allows Ontarians to call or chat online with a registered nurse and find the healthcare services and information they need all in one, easy-to-use website.

Ontario 211: A free helpline that connects you to community and social services in your area 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in more than 150 languages.

Peterborough Virtual Care Clinic & PFHT Clinic in Lakefield: These clinics provide comprehensive care to patients in Peterborough City and County who are without a healthcare provider. Unattached patients who visit either of these clinics will be placed on a waitlist for a local family doctor.

Programs and services of Peterborough Family Health Team are available by self-referral and individuals can register online.
