MASTER PLANNING AT PRHC
Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) has developed a Master Plan to support our current and future growth.
The Peterborough region is one of the fastest-growing communities in the country and one of the oldest populations demographically in Canada, with 22 per cent of residents over the age of 65. PRHC provides tertiary services to a population of 600,000 people, which includes the residents of Peterborough City and County, Northumberland, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton, and three First Nations – Curve Lake, Hiawatha and Alderville.
Our Master Plan outlines how we intend to provide the people of our community with access to the care they need, closer to home, in the years and decades to come.
WHAT IS A MASTER PLAN?
A Master Plan is the first step of the Ministry of Health’s capital planning process and is comprised of two (2) important parts:
- The Master Program: Looks at the services PRHC provides and the population growth we can expect.
- The Master Plan: Looks at how our building can support our services.
Our Master Plan was developed in consultation with our internal and external stakeholders, as well as the larger Peterborough community. In-person engagement sessions and an online community survey were held throughout 2019 and 2020.
The Master Plan is informed by this community input and is aligned with our Strategic Plan.
THE FIRST PHASE: REGIONAL PROGRAM EXPANSION PROJECT
The first and most critical phase of our Master Plan is the Regional Program Expansion Project (RPEP).
This initial phase of our Master Plan will address urgent care needs in our patient population, using existing shelled-in space at PRHC to address the immediate needs of our community and region.
Expanded services will include:
WHAT’S NEXT?
In January 2025, the provincial government announced that it had approved funding for a planning grant to support the expansion of our regional Mental Health Crisis Response Unit. Learn more about this important investment here.
Our proposal for the remaining regional program expansions identified in the RPEP remains with the Ministry of Health’s Capital Planning branch. There is no set timing for a grant decision; it is at the discretion of the Government of Ontario.
As we launch into the work to expand our crisis response unit, PRHC will continue to advocate for the needs of the Peterborough region.
