Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) has been selected to participate in an internationally recognized program to measure and improve the quality of surgical care.
PRHC is one of 15 successful applicants to the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program – Ontario (NSQIP-ON) to participate in an 18-month quality improvement initiative. Forty hospitals from across Ontario submitted proposals; we are the only hospital in the Central East LHIN to be selected for participation.
The NSQIP-ON is supported by the Ontario Association of General Surgeons and Health Quality Ontario (HQO), and is a collaborative network that allows hospitals to share surgical best practices, compare results and experiences, learn from one another and network among peers. The program enables the standardized capture of surgical data and comparison between different organizations with the overall goal of improving surgical care.
“Our top priority is to promote safe, high-quality patient care and to ensure the best possible outcomes for our surgical patients,” said Dr. Lynn Mikula, who will take on the role of Chief, Surgery on July 1. “This program will help all participating sites to share best practices and knowledge with one another, in order to achieve these common improvement goals.”
Dr. Mikula will lead program implementation at PRHC, engaging the surgical team and sharing data within the organization to implement quality initiatives. Roughly 45 pieces of data will be collected and submitted for each surgical procedure completed, including pre-operative risk factors and post-operative complications. NSQIP provides each hospital with the necessary tools to analyze the data collected and identify areas for quality improvement, allowing us to monitor outcomes after surgery, including rates of wound infection, bladder infection, pneumonia and cardiac complications, among other things.
