Collaborative efforts hospital-wide achieve 11% improvement in one year

This month, PRHC received a letter of commendation from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, congratulating the hospital for its “outstanding” Emergency Department performance.

In the letter, the Ministry recognizes the Health Centre for achieving an 11 per cent reduction in Emergency Department Length of Stay (ED LOS) in one year, from 2014 to 2015.

Notably, the number of patient visits to the Emergency Department at PRHC has also increased 12.5 per cent in recent years, from 73,000 in 2013/14 to more than 82,000 in 2015/16.

“On behalf of the senior leadership team at PRHC, I want to offer my congratulations and thanks to everyone across the organization who has played a part in making this achievement a reality – both for the Health Centre, and for the patients we serve every day,” said Dr. Peter McLaughlin, President & CEO, in a message of congratulations and thanks to PRHC healthcare professionals, staff and volunteers. “It is through the hard work and collaboration of our people that we have achieved this result and received recognition at the provincial level.”

“I have every confidence that as we move forward with the same effort and determination that has helped us get to where we are today, our exceptional team of professionals at PRHC will continue to achieve many more successes in the years to come,” added Dr. McLaughlin.

“The letter of commendation from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is clear recognition of the ongoing efforts by everyone at PRHC to provide timely and accessible care to local residents,” said Deborah Hammons, CEO, Central East LHIN. “The LHIN continues to work with PRHC, other hospitals, health and community services providers, physicians, patients and their families, on making even greater improvement in emergency department wait times and length of stay both in Peterborough and across the Central East region. Our thanks to the dedicated teams at PRHC on this achievement.”

The Ministry’s letter identifies that PRHC has shown the “greatest improvement in the 90th percentile ED Length of Stay (LOS) for all patients within the High-Volume Community Hospital Group in 2015 compared to the previous year.”

The letter also notes that a representative from the Central East LHIN will continue working with the Health Centre to determine “how the strategies that contributed to this achievement can be leveraged to help improve ED performance at other hospitals throughout the province.”
