“I have been a member of the PRHC family for 37 years, and I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of fantastic staff and patients during my time here,” says Debbie Buckley about her role in Environmental Services (EVS) at PRHC. “This job has allowed me to gain a lot of great experience and provided me with lots of personal and professional growth. I’m proud to be part of such a diverse hospital.”
Debbie started at PRHC in the kitchen and tried a few different roles before landing in EVS. She’s part of an important team that keeps the Diagnostic Imaging department clean and sanitary, including all procedure rooms and waiting rooms. She is responsible for disposing of trash, soiled linens, recyclables, medical waste and more, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Proud of her work to provide a clean, safe environment for patients, family members and healthcare workers, Debbie says her favourite part of the role is interacting and connecting with patients.
“Being a patient isn’t easy, so I try to make a personal connection with patients when I can. Sometimes I’ll make small talk with them as I’m cleaning their room, or I’ll put music on my phone if they’re open to it. At times, you’ll find both the patient and me singing along to a song as I do my job. I try very hard to always be respectful and supportive of patients’ individual needs during their visit here at PRHC.”
