Of nearly 800 hospitals across the U.S. and Canada participating in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) has been recognized among 66 hospitals deemed “Meritorious” for our surgical quality composite score in 2016.
Of the 66 hospitals recognized, only eight (8) are located in Canada. Other hospitals deemed “Meritorious” for their NSQIP results in 2016 include Sunnybrook Health Sciences, Mount Sinai, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins.
“We are proud and pleased to be recognized for the quality of our surgical program and our safety outcomes,” said Dr. Justin Clouthier, PRHC vascular surgeon and physician lead for the NSQIP program. “To find ourselves in the company of so many world-class hospitals on this list is a testament to the excellent work being done by our surgical team to ensure our patients receive the best and safest possible care.”
The NSQIP is an internationally-recognized and validated quality improvement program overseen by the American College of Surgeons that tracks data from participating hospitals in areas such as mortality, cardiac failure, respiratory and surgical site infections (SSI) related to surgical procedures. The goal of the program is to reduce surgical morbidity and to provide a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as “best scientific evidence” to the practice of surgery.
PRHC was one of 15 hospitals selected in 2015 to participate in the NSQIP pilot program, from among 40 applicants across Ontario that submitted proposals. The program has since expanded to include nearly 800 hospitals.
“This is an incredibly proud moment for our surgical program, for PRHC, and for our community and region,” said Dr. Lynn Mikula, PRHC surgeon and Chair of the hospital’s Medical Advisory Committee. “In addition to recognizing the hospital’s surgical team for this tremendous achievement, I would like to thank the PRHC Foundation, and through them our community donors, for their support of the hospital’s surgical program. Their recent $1 million investment in leading-edge technology and equipment to support the expansion of our minimally-invasive surgery program is enabling improved safety and quality outcomes, with smaller incisions, lower infection risk, faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays.”
