Dr. Kayhan Ghatavi says evidence in ongoing investigation “does not corroborate” media reports
Dr. Kayhan Ghatavi, Chief and Medical Director, Psychiatry, spoke with media today to address reports related to the care a patient received at PRHC.
When speaking with media, Dr. Ghatavi stated that the evidence he has reviewed to date does not corroborate the version of events previously reported.
While the hospital is prevented by privacy law and hospital policy from publicly discussing specific patient details, Dr. Ghatavi pointed out that his review, which included video footage of the events described, showed the patient was treated respectfully, and that the patient’s wishes and preferences were accommodated by staff.
“Four highly-qualified psychiatrists at PRHC were involved developing the plan of care, and all four were in agreement with respect to the diagnosis and plan of care,” said Dr. Ghatavi.
The psychiatrist who spoke with media earlier this week, he said “was not at PRHC and did not witness the care received by the patient.”
“There is always room for improvement in the care we provide, and we will continue to work collaboratively with our patients, their families, our staff, our physicians and our partners in community to ensure we are providing the best possible care for our patients, who come to us from a wide variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds,” he added.
Dr. Ghatavi pointed out that the staff and physicians in the Mental Health and Addictions program at PRHC have great compassion for patients with mental health concerns.
“The professionals I have the privilege of working with in this program do so because they are passionate about the work they do, and they want to play a role in helping our patients toward their recovery.”
