The role of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is to decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize and distribute all of the reusable patient supplies, instruments, and equipment for the hospital in order to ensure high standards of infection prevention and control within the health care facility.

SPD provides these services to all areas within the hospital but has a particular focus on the Operating Rooms, the Labor & Delivery Suites, and the Emergency department.

Distribution of medical/surgical supplies and other items are controlled by SPD centrally in order to maintain the flow of sterile supplies efficiently and effectively throughout the hospital.

All staff in the department are highly skilled technicians trained in the Sterile Techniques course provided by the Central Service Association of Ontario.
